Jiu Jitsu; power, strength & technique combined

Buchecha winning the IBJJF 2016 Black Belt open weight
On Sunday 5th Jun 2016 I was lucky enough to watch the IBJJF Worlds 2016 Black Belt finals, I watched some amazing fights and it got me thinking about how the best fighters seem to have the perfect combination of technique and physical conditioning, mainly sparked by how well and quickly Buchecha is able to move for such a large fighter.
Yes, I had seen videos of Buchecha fighting Jiu Jitsu, although sitting about 20 feet away and watching it first hand is another thing all together. Watching his semi final match Vs João Gabriel Rocha in the Ultra Heavy category he was very technical in his approach to the match at the start, although as soon as he saw the opportunity to establish the mount and then quickly transition to high mount to attack the armbar, he took the position in a heartbeat.

Now, the first and foremost element in becoming a good Jiu Jitsu fighter, is practicing Jiu Jitsu over and over and over. You can't shortcut that part I'm afraid. However, knowing that speed goes hand in hand with strength and power, I can make a pretty good guess that a key element in his training is strength and conditioning. In fact just a quick look at his Instagram feed shows examples of his strength & conditioning work...

Following that same thought pattern I then checked the Instagram feeds of the other Open Weight finalist Erberth Santos and also one of the highly technical fighter and Light Featherweight winner Paulo Miyao and what you can see again are examples of both fighters including strength and conditioning as part of the program...

So, what's my point about strength, power and technique in Jiu Jitsu?

Some of the best Jiu Jitsu fighters in the world include strength and conditioning as part of their training program. I can't draw any further conclusions than that as I don't know the details of the programs of these fighters, although I think a fair conclusion is that if you want to be the best Jiu Jitsu fighter you can be then you need strength and conditioning in your life.

One way to do that is to read my earlier article on 'Key concepts for strength training in Jiu Jitsu' as well as the many other articles and videos on the blog and start developing your own program, or contact me directly to request help with a personalised training plan.

Also, I came across a cool short video that I wanted to share that shows some nice variations for developing pushing strength and power in Jiu Jitsu which can easily form part of your program, check it out below.
